Nickelodeon’s tween-targeted ‘Naked Brothers Band’ sets a show in Cleveland

NBC’s “30 Rock” aired its Cleveland-centric episode last season. Now the young rockers of Nickelodeon’s “The Naked Brothers Band” hope to hit some comic high notes with a story set in Cleveland.

Titled “Cleveland” and airing at 8:30 tonight, the half-hour episode of Nickelodeon’s tween-targeted series follows brothers Nat and Alex Wolff as they hit the road in a psychedelic bus for their group’s first national tour. Band member Thomas Batuello is tired of Nat getting all the attention, and a misquote during an interview makes him a Cleveland favorite.

The actors didn’t travel to Northeast Ohio for the episode. They filmed their scenes on sets in New York, but a camera crew did make the trip to Cleveland for shots of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and other locations.

Created, written, produced and directed by the Wolff brothers’ mom, actress Polly Draper (”thirtysomething”), “The Naked Brothers Band” is a mockumentary comedy series chronicling a fictional version of a kids’ rock band.

Now in its second season, “The Naked Brothers Band” is one of television’s highest-rated shows with the tween audience, viewers 6 to 11 years old.

The Wolff brothers’ father, jazz pianist and composer Michael Wolff, appears in the show as the boys’ geeky, accordion-playing, somewhat-clueless dad. He was the band leader and musical director on Cleveland native Arsenio Hall’s 1989-94 talk show.

Tonight’s episode also includes the debut of the band’s latest song, “Body I Occupy.” Lead singer and keyboardist Nat, 13, wrote 13 of the 15 songs on the group’s debut Nickelodeon and Columbia Records CD, “The Naked Brothers Band.” Alex, 10, is the band’s drummer and resident “bad boy.” The series may suggest a tween version of “The Monkees,” but Alex was taught the drums by Beatle Ringo Starr.
