Nickelodeon’s ‘iCarly’ Special Delivers Strong Ratings

Posted by johnnytalkback on June 19, 2008

Friday’s primetime episode of Nickelodeon’s hit series iCarly garnered more than 4.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched, non-sports program on basic cable, network officials said Tuesday.

The iCarly Saves TV episode, which aired June 13 at 8 p.m. ET, drew an 8.8 rating and 1.9 million tween viewers (age 9-14) and a 9.1 rating and 1.9 million kids between 6 and 11 years of age.

For the year, iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove (pictured), ranks as the third-most watched program among teen viewers for both cable and broadcast television, ranking behind only American Idol and Zoey 101, another Nickelodeon series.

Leading up to the primetime special, the iCarly companion Web site, received 973,000 visitors. Nickelodeon also supported iCarly Saves TV with a special mini-site, which featured a sneak peek of the special, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and music videos from the iCarly album, an iCarly Saves TV game, message boards and an mp3 player for streaming tracks from the iCarly album.

Nickelodeon said the mini-site has received 225,000 visits since its launch on May 29.

Viacom bets “iCarly” is next tween queen

Posted by johnnytalkback on June 9, 2008

Miranda Cosgrove, the star of Nickelodeon’s “iCarlyDoes “iCarly” have that Hillary Duff-stuff? Is she serious like Miley Cyrus?

Viacom’s Nickelodeon and Sony Music are betting big that 15-year-old “iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrove will be the next “tween” media goldmine, stepping into the shoes of Duff (she of the “Lizzie McGuire” series, multiple films, and music releases) earlier in the decade, and current golden goose Miley Cyrus, aka “Hannah Montana.”

The challenge is significant if Nickelodeon can steal some tween thunder from Walt Disney, which is home to both the Lizzie McGuire and Hannah Montana franchises, and the future home to a show by hot boy band The Jonas Brothers . Read the rest of this entry »

THQ’s Nick range passes $1 billion mark

Posted by sutukh on June 3, 2008

More than 50 million units shifted worldwide; 2008 line-up revealed.

THQ’s longstanding video games relationship with Nickelodeon continues to bear fruit, resulting in sales of more than $1 billion and accounting for over 50 million units worldwide.

The company has also unveiled its line-up for 2008, with many popular characters returning.

The Naked Brothers Band will make their video games debut, with The Naked Brothers Band: The Video Game (working title). In addition, Spongebob Squarepants will take on a new creative form in Drawn to Life: Spongebob Squarepants Edition. Based on last year’s top selling game for Nintendo’s DS system, the title will allow players to draw their own characters.

The 2008 portfolio will also include new games based on Nick TV shows Tak and the Power of Juju, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Back at The Barnyard.

“With the enormous popularity of Wii and DS coupled with our exceptionally diverse portfolio of Nickelodeon-based games, THQ continues to lead in family entertainment,” said Jim Huntley, director of global brand management at THQ.

“We expect our upcoming titles to offer completely new ways for families to play together.”

‘The Mighty B!’: new Nickelodeon cartoon

Posted by sutukh on May 23, 2008

By Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
Watching the pilot of Nickelodeon’s “The Mighty B!” I couldn’t help but think, strangely enough, of “Sunset Boulevard.” Or at least the famous quote: “We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces.”

“The Mighty B!” follows the exploits of young Bessie Higgenbottom, a not-quite-10-year-old Honeybee scout so dedicated she imagines herself, at times, as the first badge-collecting superhero. There is, not to worry, plenty of dialogue — of the loud, hyper, neon-hued but occasionally very funny variety that is standard Nick. Indeed much has been made of Bessie’s voice, or at least of Amy Poehler, the gal behind her voice.

Between now famously impersonating Hillary Clinton on “Saturday Night Live” and starring next to Tina Fey in the movie “Baby Mama,” Poehler is riding one of those career tsunamis that could leave her on top of the world or amid the rubble and wreckage. Either way, she gives Bessie a nice lisp and an amusingly realistic tendency to yell and badger and obsess. Not that I would recognize these characteristics among any children of my acquaintance.

Nickelodeon 2008 Games

Posted by sutukh on May 10, 2008

THQ has the “kid-friendly” genre all sewn up. Between their Pixar license and their Nickelodeon license, they make the games that kids want. And it looks like 2008 will be no different as the company has announced their 2008 slate of games based on Nickelodeon properties. They also seem to know what consoles the kids love as there will be no Nickelodeon games released this year on the PlayStation 3, PSP or Xbox 360. All of these games will only be coming to the DS, PlayStation 2 or the Wii.

  • The Naked Brothers Band: The Videogame (working title) (DS, PS2, Wii) – Based on the highly popular Nickelodeon TV show of the same name, this music-based video game allows players to live the superstar life of The Naked Brothers Band. Playing as the band, players will embark on a nationwide tour where they can experience all aspects of being in the band: singing, playing multiple instruments, controlling stage effects like lighting and pyrotechnics and even creating live concert videos. Features 25 of The Naked Brothers Band’s greatest hits.
  • Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition (DS) – Players will experience SpongeBob SquarePants like never before by using the unique drawing mechanic perfected in last year’s innovative Nintendo DS title, Drawn to Life, to draw their own character and populate the world of Bikini Bottom. Using the Nintendo DS stylus, players will create their own hero, defeat DoodleBob’s rogue drawings, and rescue SpongeBob and his friends.
  • Avatar – The Last Airbender: Into the Inferno (DS, PS2, Wii) – Players will play as Aang and friends in this action-packed video game based on the final season of the highly acclaimed TV series. New gameplay features will allow players to interact with characters from the TV show while performing thrilling martial arts moves with enhanced Wii Remote controls in order to defeat the Fire Nation.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom (DS, PS2, Wii) – SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom is an action-packed adventure featuring 10 playable characters from some of the most popular Nickelodeon TV shows, as well as numerous iconic locations such as Retroville, Amity Park and Bikini Bottom. Players will play cooperatively as both heroes and villains while utilizing special gadgets in order to defeat the Morphoids.
  • Tak and the Guardians of Gross (PS2, Wii) – Tak and the Guardians of Gross follows the shaman’s apprentice as he visits the Spoiled Shrine and accidentally removes a strange crystal that explodes and releases the four giant Grosstrosities. Using all new “parkour” style of gameplay, players will be running on walls, sliding down poles, and swinging on vines to navigate action-packed levels.

In addition, Tak Mojo Mistake is scheduled for release on Nintendo DS.

  • Back at the Barnyard: Slop Bucket Games (working title) (DS) – The popular Nickelodeon series stampedes its way onto Nintendo DS for the first time. Players will compete in the first annual Slop Bucket Games – a series of wacky, fun, sporting events and reinvented classic arcade games with barnyard motifs.source

    Nickelodeon Cartoon Draws Unusual Fans

Posted by sutukh on May 10, 2008

Forget Dr. McDreamy and the fashionable gals of “Sex and The City.” The stars of a hit television show aimed at preschoolers, “Yo Gabba Gabba!” are now the ones capturing the often coveted eyes of twenty-somethings nationwide.

    Yo Gabba Gabba

The Nickelodeon series, a mix of animated shorts and live action, aims to teach kids important life lessons, such as why it’s good to eat vegetables and how to make their beds.

But it’s not just a hit among the crayon-wielding, sticky-fingered crowd that the producers originally intended the show for.

An older demographic — college students and many parents of preschoolers — has become just as, if not more, obsessed with “Yo Gabba Gabba!” as the toddlers who the show is aimed at.

Georgia Southern University sophomore James Kicklighter told ABCNews.com that he and his friends meet to watch “Yo Gabba Gabba!” three times a week.

Today THQ announced their upcoming video-game lineup with their long time partner Nickelodeon. The Naked Brothers Band title is based off a popular Nickelodeon television show that chronicles the life of Nat and Alex Wolff and their experiences as the front of a kids’ rock band. In the game, players can use their creativity to populate Bikini Bottom by drawing their own characters.
